My home town. Sadly, or maybe for the better, the old district of Pitsmoor no longer exists as I knew it growing up. The above photo is the street I grew up on. The street sign is new-- the post box is the original one.

It all started right here..........

Sheffield, England. Situated on the River Don in S Yorkshire, this city is famous for its steel alloys, cutlery, forging and some really good bands and a famous person or two. The name Sheffield is derived from the River Sheaf which runs through the city, as well as the River Don. Known as the Steel City it developed the steel crucible and stainless steel during the 19th century. This page will GROW as this is the city I was born in.

Showing these old pics is a little unfair as that is what it was like 40 years ago--  Sheffield is a clean and modern city now so I will post more updated pics as we go along.

Wait a MO? Click HERE to see modern Sheffield! Lets be fair!

And click HERE to read A Brief History of Sheffield

but read on to catch the good old pics of the Sheffield I knew as a kid.

The Old Queens Head, Pond Hill,----the oldest pub in Sheffield. They say it dates back to 1475 but the oldest written records date back to 1582.

Pitsmoor, where I was born, again this was the 60's it is not like this any more.

These pics show just what it was like in Pitsmoor when I was a kid. Today you don't see this any more the place has become a very much cleaner city. This area is literally a street away from where I was born.

Tristan on the site of my birthplace. It used to be terraced houses. See all the industrial buildings in the rear? That was where it all started-- the industrial revolution, the Bessemer furnace, Stainless Steel (watch out for my article in Harry Brearley the inventor of SS-- our names are close no?)There will be articles about the women of Sheffield who took over the work on the furnaces while the men were at war.
